"are we nearly there yet ?"
It’s always necessary to know where you are on your (strategic) journey.
Partly because people need that and partly because things change and you may need to change your plans accordingly.
Measuring progress is a given to us.
Draw a 'line in the sand' from which you can measure progress.
We think it’s helpful for businesses to use frameworks (Balanced Scorecard, EFQM, IIP etc) to aid the measurement process and also to focus measurements on what actually matters.
Organisations sometimes have far too many measures and arguably none of the ones that really matter.
However, identifying the few key measures that are really important to the organisation in achieving its goals (ie. implementing its strategy) is the only thing that makes it happen.
Explain to people why these things are important and demonstrate the cause and effect relationships. This answers a key question for most employees, “how does what I do fit in to the organisation?”
Again all our work is focused on engaging employees. It’s good for them and it’s good for the business. Measurement can sometimes be seen as an impersonal hard-edged topic. However, while the process may engage minds, if it’s done properly you mind find that you engage the rest of the person too!
